Protocol: The night rides are usually at a moderate 15-17 mph pace, but slower riders are welcome. Generally riders tend to break up into smaller groups and ride at a pace comfortable to their level. It is requested that all lights be set on non-blinking mode, as a flashing light may be visually distracting to other riders. Safety: Every effort is made to make this ride safe. Since we're visible at a distance, our greatest hazard isn't the occasional motorist Rather the main danger are the deer who come out at night. It is important to stay alert and descend downhill at a conservative speed. Please have fresh batteries installed, as dim lights will make you less visible on the road. Gear: At a minimum each rider should bring one headlight and one taillight. The front light may NOT be a tiny strobe light. It's also recommended that you consider bringing reflective gear: vest or sash and leg reflectors. If you do not have night gear, someone can possibly lend it to you for duration of the ride, if you request it before the ride, and arrive early so we have time to mount lights. Clothing: As the weather starts to chill, you will want to consider bringing along more layers of bike-specific winter clothing. In no particular order: tights, jackets, vests, arm warmers, booties, full-fingered gloves, mittens, ear warmers, clear glasses, etc. It's generally best to bring clothing that can be layered. Remember that the second half of the ride may be cooler than at the start. Riders of all levels are welcome to come out. Please contact me if you have any questions. Jeff Bauer |

Beginner rider... New rider... Novice rider... Just learning-to-ride rider...
However you describe yourself, the Harpeth Bike Club wants to help you ride more, learn more, and gain confidence and skill on your bike.
We know that a pack of lycra-clad cyclists, chatting casually about their favorite 60-mile route or their 18 mph pace or their favorite monster hill, can be a bit intimidating. Especially if you're still getting used to all those gears and the terrifying clips on the bottom of your shoes!
We know. We've all been there. But we've gotten better as we've ridden more -- and we want to help you to the same. For the 2008 riding season, the Harpeth Bike Club is providing new rides, new enhancements and new resources for beginner/new riders.
Rides are regularly posted on this site and announced on the club's e-mail listserve. And, even rides not specifically listed as a "beginner ride" often have options for shorter distances that might suit your level. And, once you're comfortable with distances around 20-25 miles, come out for the regular Sunday Pancake Ride. You'll generally find riders of all levels at this popular ride. And this ride (like almost all HBC rides) has a sweeper -- someone dedicated to making sure that no rider gets left behind!
Also, don't forget to check the site's Learning Opportunities links for clinics to help you with your skills.
There are few things better than a day on your bike. We look forward to riding with you.
