Longview needs votes in Get Kids Fit contest
Longview Elementary School could win up to $10,000 to use toward its fitness program. The school was recently named a finalist in the Henkel Helps Get Kids Fit contest.
As part of the competition, Henkel Helps will award $30,000 to deserving schools that show how they get their students fit and active. Each finalist was asked to submit a two minute video which explains how they would spend the prize money.
"If we win, we'd like to use the money to purchase PE equipment that students could check out and take home," said Longview PE Teacher Robin Reding. "So we put together a video that kind of brings that idea to life."
Beginning October 31, people will be able to vote ONLINE for their favorite school video. The schools with the most votes between October 31 and November 20 will win. People can also sign up today to receive an email reminder when voting begins later this month.

Have an affordable option in Cool Springs.
GracePointe Healthcare is an affordable “self-pay” or “insurance-free”
family practice - the first one of its kind in the Franklin/Cool Springs

polices to lower the cost of their health insurance premiums. Often, patients

also offer Smart Care Plans (that include some basic lab tests and phone
consultations for free) which lower the cost of visits even more.
They offer same day and next day appointments with very little wait time and

Williamson schools adopt healthier milk option
In an effort to provide students with the healthiest food options available, the Williamson County Schools Food Nutrition Department is changing the type of milk that is served in school cafeterias. The district is converting all chocolate and strawberry milk to a more wholesome product called TruMoo.
"TruMoo chocolate milk has fewer calories and less sugar than our previous chocolate milk and is made without high fructose corn syrup," said WCS Food Service Director James Remete. "It is fat-free with 130 calories and 22 grams of sugar."
By switching to TruMoo chocolate milk, Williamson County Schools will be following updated government regulations, which call for schools to serve only low-fat unflavored milk or fat-free flavored milk beginning in 2012. TruMoo chocolate milk meets all of the proposed USDA requirements.
"Williamson County Schools cares deeply about each child’s nutrition," said Remete. "We see TruMoo as a great solution to provide our students with the nutrients they need in an improved formula we know they'll enjoy."

Tennessee Excels in Childhood Immunizations
Tennessee continues to make great strides in the rate of immunization for young children. The Department of Health is dedicated to increasing immunization rates as part of its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all Tennesseans, and reminds parents of the need for this important preventive health measure.
“Recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable illnesses such as pertussis, or whooping cough, remind us of the urgent need for vaccination,” said Health Commissioner Susan R. Cooper, MSN, RN. “Vaccines save lives, and we are committed to ensuring the health of Tennessee’s youngest citizens.”
According to the recently released America’s Health Rankings®, Tennessee is ranked first for having the nation’s highest rate of immunization for children aged 19 to 35 months for selected vaccines. Because the benchmark used in this year’s report has not before been published, it is not possible to compare this rate with past years. However, AHR ranked Tennessee fourth in the nation for immunizations among the same age group in its 2009 report.
“Immunizations are the first line of defense in protecting children from an array of very serious illnesses," said Kelly Moore, MD, MPH, medical director of the Tennessee Immunization Program. “However, it’s not easy to vaccinate every child on time. We celebrate the accomplishment of parents, doctors, nurses and other public health professionals in making the state’s childhood immunization program among the best in the nation.”
Disease prevention is a key component of public health. The Department of Health follows recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for vaccinations and urges immunization as a crucial part of preventive health care.
“We are also working to improve Tennessee’s immunization rates of teenagers and adults,” said Moore. “Everyone should ask about influenza and other vaccines they might need the next time they visit a health care provider. When people get the vaccines they need, everyone in the community is safer and healthier.”
Every child under 19 years of age in Tennessee can get all routinely recommended vaccines, regardless of ability to pay. The federal Vaccines for Children program guarantees that children without insurance coverage for vaccines can get them for just a small administration fee at many doctors’ offices and all county health departments. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to contact their health care provider or local health department for details. A list of Tennessee’s county health departments is available online at http://health.state.tn.us/localdepartments.htm.
