BHS Summer Freshman Academy space limited

Time is running out for students who want to be part of the 2012 Summer Freshman Academy at Brentwood High School.

This annual event gives rising freshmen an oprtunity to experience fundamental concepts through engaging activities and integrating core content subjects. 

The Summer Freshman Academy will be held June 11-14 from 8 a.m. until noon each day.  There is no cost to attend, but space is limited so make your plans today.

Brentwood Bruin Boogie 5K Run/Walk Saturday

Roadways Affected: Granny White Pike & Virginia Way

On Saturday, March 24, 2012 Brentwood High School is sponsoring the Brentwood Bruin Boogie.

This 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at Brentwood High School and enter Granny White Pike at Brentwood Middle School.

The run will travel north on Granny White Pike to Virginia Way and then take Virginia Way to Brecon Road. The run will turn around at Brecon Road and return to Brentwood Middle School via Granny White Pike.

The north bound lane of Granny White Pike will be closed to traffic from Murray Lane to Virginia Way. Northbound traffic will be diverted to the center turn lane during this event. Virginia Way will be closed to traffic from Granny White Pike to Brecon Road. The roads will be closed from 7:45 am to approximately 10:00 am.

Parents are invited to attend a special event called How to Host a Teen Party tonight from 7-8 pm at Brentwood High.

A panel discussion will focus on the risks and liability of hosting a teen party. The meeting will be held in the BHS Campbell Center.

Hosts are Parents Supporting S.T.A.R.S (Students Taking A Right Stand.

The Brentwood High School portion of the 2012 National Shakespeare Competition was held January 25 at the school.  The annual contest is open to all ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students.

Brentwood Senior Shelby Buscher won this year's competition by performing a scene from Hamlet.  Shelby will move on to the Regional Competition March 10 at the Troutt Theatre in Nashville.  Sigfried Schlunk placed second and Natalie Bennie finished third.

"All the students competing this year were excellent in artistic skill, understanding and in communication to the audience," said Lee Huddleston, Brentwood High School teacher and organizer.

Judges included Jean Hevel, senior English and speech teacher and Town Centre actor; Jean Klein-Kracht, senior Honors and AP English Teacher; and Huddleston, senior AP English Literature Teacher.

The winner of the regional competition will advance to the national competition in New York with an all-expense paid weekend to perform for the chance to win a summer in London studying Shakespeare.

Brentwood High students win video contest

The Brentwood High School media program dominated this year's Titans of Taste Video Contest.  The annual competition is sponsored by the Tennessee Titans, Purity Milk and the Southeast Dairy Association.  Schools from across Middle Tennessee competed in the event which asked students to produce a video publicizing the Titans and Purity Milk.

Brentwood High School students won first, second and third place.  In addition to being honored at a luncheon at LP Field December 8, the students received eight tickets and sideline passes to the Titans game verses Tampa Bay, and the Brentwood High School media program was presented with a check for $1,500.

Congratulations to the following students:  Riley Ahlstrand, Emily Glasgow, Zach Zimmerman, Logan Kaczmarek, Zach Madell, Danielle Wilson, Zach Driver and Haylie Craver.  Their teacher is Ronnie Adcock.

Nearly 600 students from 58 Tennessee high schools converged on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus Thursday, October 20, to compete in the UT–Pro2Serve Math Contest.

Three Williamson County Schools' students were winners while Page High School placed second in the Math Bowl.

The top ten individual contest winners received four-year, $4,000 scholarships to UT Knoxville. Winners were Aditya Gudibanda of Hume-Fogg Academy, Nashville; Kevin Sun and Brandon Zheng of Collierville High, Collierville; Daniel Zuo of White Station High School, Memphis; Garret Sullivan and Richard Ouyang of Memphis University School, Memphis; Siegfried Schlurk of Brentwood High, Brentwood; Yang Song of McCallie School, Chattanooga; Jared Schaumann of Fred J. Page High School, Franklin; and Dylan Young of University School of Nashville, Nashville.

Scholarships are funded by UT Knoxville and Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek.

Winners of the first round of the individual contest included Aditya Gudibanda from Hume-Fogg Academy, Daniel Zuo from White Station High School, Dylan Young from University School of Nashville, Jiahe Gu from Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet High School in Nashville, and Garret Sullivan from Memphis University School.

Winners were chosen based on their scores on an essay-type exam that tested their knowledge on algebra I and II and geometry.

Honorable mentions, which include winners that would have won this year but won a previous year, include Stewart Rhee, Seungmoon Lee, and Ziyu Liu of McCallie School; Demetrious Bovopoulos of West High School in Knoxville; Frances Ding of Ravenwood High School in Brentwood; Hyeesan Chun of King’s Academy in Seymour; Lawrence Hoag and Toange Zhan of White Station High School; and Dalton Chaffee of Bearden High School in Knoxville.

The contest also featured the Math Bowl, a double-elimination team competition. University School of Nashville was the overall winner of the Math Bowl, followed by Collierville High School. First place in the small-school category went to University School of Nashville, with second place going to Fred J. Page High School.

All winners received trophies, plaques, and certificates in recognition of excellence at different stages of the competition.

The contest is presented by the College of Arts and Sciences mathematics department and UT alumnus Barry Goss and his company, Professional Project Services Inc. (Pro2Serve®), which provides technical and engineering services that support the infrastructures of government and private industry and helps ensure our nation’s security. The media sponsor is the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Run For Rotary will take place Saturday in Brentwood with 5K, 10K and fun run events scheduled, starting at 7:50 a.m. and ending at approximately 10 a.m.

The event will impact traffic Saturday morning with the City of Brentwood issuing the following traffic advisories:

Primary Location: Brentwood High School, McGavock Farms, Maryland Farms

Roadways Affected:

· Murray Lane

· Good Springs Road

· McGavock Road

· Granny White Pike

· Virginia Way

· Maryland Way and Ward Circle

Notes: The 10K race will start at 8:00 am. The 5K race will start at approximately 8:20 am. During the race, roads in the McGavock Farms subdivision will be closed to traffic. Murray Lane will have one west bound lane closed during the event, northbound traffic on Granny White Pike will be diverted to the center turn lane, Virginia Way will be closed to traffic while runners are on the course, traffic on Ward Circle will be diverted to the appropriate lane to go around the runners, and one east bound lane on Maryland Way will be closed to traffic while runners are on the course.

Williamson County schools were well represented April 28 at this year's Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.  The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards. The annual awards were judged by TV professionals and handed out in 14 categories including news, editing and sports. News Channel 5 Meteorologist Lelan Statom hosted the event, which featured entries from across the state. Brentwood High School students Philip Bradley and Jackson Hensley won two first place awards.  Their video titled Good Life received the award for Animation/Graphics/Special Effects.  Bradley and Hensley also won the top award for Directing.  Their teacher is Ronnie Adcock. Independence High School won four first place awards including the top prize in the Newscast category.  Jonathan Wilson, Andrew Sawyer, Ernie Overton and Graham Sawyer won the award for Long Form - Fiction with their video titled The Beard.  Sam Ciccoline, Preston Coyle and Kevin Bratt won the award for Camera for their video Without a Hearth and Perris Johnson and Taylor Dardan won the award for Editing with their video Heartless.  Matt Balzer is the media teacher at Independence High School. Ravenwood High School students Cameron Childs, Chris Sherry, Nick Taras and Ryan Churchill received first place in the Arts and Entertainment category for their video Hearts and Minds.  Ravenwood's Jayce Boynton and Taylor Minor also won the award for Public Affairs/Community Service for their video Know What You Throw.  Their advisor was Sara Sweitzer.

Williamson County Schools is home to this year's Mid-Cumberland Regional High School Teacher of the Year.

Brentwood High School teacher Mark Baker was selected for the honor among educators from 12 school systems.  Baker, a language arts teacher, will now be considered for Teacher of the Year honors for the state of Tennessee.

From Williamson County School's In Focus Ten year old child prodigy Geoff Gallante will perform this month with the Brentwood High School Wind Ensemble.  Gallante began playing the trumpet at the age of four.  Since then, he has wowed audiences with his amazing ability while performing for crowds at stadiums, concert halls and even the White House. In addition to appearances on the Today Show and the Tonight Show, Gallante has played alongside some of the top trumpet luminaries in the world including Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson and Chris Botti.  He has also performed the national anthem in 15 professional sports venues across the country. Brentwood High School Band Director Randy Box says he's glad his students will have the opportunity to play alongside someone who has accomplished so much at such a young age.  "We are really looking forward to having him perform with us," said Box.  "He's only 10, but he already has an impressive resume of performances and credits." Gallante will be the guest soloist at the Brentwood High School Wind Ensemble Concert March 10.  The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the Campbell Center Auditorium.
